[Cooking] Breakfast recipes

My all time favorite breakfast is rice flakes (we call it aval in tamil.. think its poha in hindi).. it is so easy to cook and tastes yummy too. so, you will always find packets of aval at home.. i pick up the slightly thicker ones, because the thin flat ones soak too fast, and become gooey when cooked.. these are good, as the flakes can be seen individually, yes, it does take a wee bit longer to soak, n get soft, but wat the heck when end result is worth it.... :)

Different ways of making it..quick n easy- for breakfast or dinner or an in between snack... healthy, nutritious and filling...

1.
Soak a cup of poha in water (for abt 5mins )
Take a kadai, add some oil- mustard seeds, urad daal, and some hing.
Now add the poha to this
Salt is then sprinkled..
Toss for a minute, and its ready to eat
can eat with curd, pickles, chutneys or anything....

2.
Soak a cup of poha in water (for abt 5mins )
Take a kadai, add some oil- mustard seeds, urad daal, onions- saute for a min before adding some tomatoes to this.
Now add the poha, salt, and if you like coriander
ready to eat..

3.
Soak a cup of poha in water (for abt 5mins )
Take a kadai, add some oil- mustard seeds, urad daal, wee bit of haldi and some hing.
Add poha to this, let it cook for a minute
remove into a vessel
squeeze the juice of 1lime and mix well[lime added after removing from gas only]

4.
Soak a cup of poha in water (for abt 5mins )
Take a kadai, add some oil- mustard seeds, urad daal, and chopped up 1 onion, couple of pods of garlic
Let this cook for 2mins
To this you can add chopped up potatoes(1) and cook till potatoes become tender
Now add the poha, salt and voila, breakfast ready.. :)

You can make variations in this depending on what veggies or masala you are fond off. i also make one with tomatoes and onions, sautee em well, and then add poha +masala+salt... experiment, you cant go wrong with this :)

[Sharing] yayyy, new bundle of joy in the house...

The birth of a baby is such a wonderful occasion , not just for the new parents but people all around. it means, another generation has sprung and there is something to look fwd to everyday.. watching the baby grow, take their first steps, utter the first syllable, and all the firsts thereon is a joyous moment....

Yes, i do love babies, but at times wish they remain babies and not grow up.. keep telling my uncle to freeze my cousin as she is now..lolz... he says he wishes he could too... Anyways... the reason for rejoicing now is that my cousin has had a baby boy last nite.. she was in pain all day, and finally delivered the baby.. :)
Now am dying to see the baby.. but alas, looks like i'll have to wait couple of days.... looking fwd to more babies ( no, i've not lost it, just that another friend is also due around now] :)

[Cooking] Bombay Chutney

Just another boring Sunday... well, not so boring thanks to the match between Aussies and India, where needless to say my team= Aussies won~~~ yipeee~~ but India did put up a good fight, must admit....

Gramma n Granpa were enjoying their afternoon siesta and came around when match was just abt to finish... the dreaded topic of " what to make for dinner" i knew will begin in a couple of mins.. lolz.. we go crazy, everyday trying to conjure up interesting stuff to make... not just for others, but for ourselves.. its just me and them... 3people, who dont mind experimenting, and trying out diff stuff.. except during weekdays lunch, we make wacko dishes n relish them..

weekdays lunch is pretty routine cos my uncle comes over for lunch and he is errrr, ummm, a bit finicky abt food and prefers the slightly boring traditional stuff... :D

anyways, coming back to topic.. today we decided to make rotis... n then the scaryyy que of what to make along with it??? broke our heads... had had Soya bean pulao and carrot+cabbage+capsicum salad along with it.. dint want to repeat veggies.. granpa suggested "Bombay chutney".. now,i've never heard of it, so asked what it was...

And well, that is what we are having for dinner.. minus onions ( cos grandparents dont eat onions, and i dont mind.. used to it now, make raita, or salad n have onions)

here is the recipe.. as narrated by gramma...
Besan flour - 3tbsp
Green Chillies 3-4
Turmeric powder - a pinch
Mustard seeds - tsp for tadka
Coriander - chopped up
Chilli powder - abt 1/2 tsp
Carrots and cabbage-finely chopped up - 1/2cup
Oil - 2 to 3 tbsp
Salt to taste
Water to make besan paste...

How you make it...
1.Mix Besan in enough water to make a runny loose mixture, to this add turmeric powder and wee bit of salt....

2.In a pan, add some oil and once it is hot, add mustard seeds, letting it splutter
To this add the green chillies and salt.
You can add the vegetables at this point, letting it cook for abt 3mins..
Now add the besan paste you've made, allow it to boil for 3-5 minutes.

keep stirring so there are no lumps, and until the mixture becomes thick.. reallly thick.

Voila.. it is ready... now, am yet to taste, will do that and let you know how it was!!! :D

Que for readers - -
Why on earth is it called Bombay Chutney??????????????????????
Did it originate in bombay?
does bombay have rights over it?
shd people in bombay only make it??
why oh why?????
if u were to give it another name, what would it be?????????????????? ;)

oh,btw, it tasted good... not very good, but good, just plain good.. texture was a bit like eggwhite( when it is boiled, the kinda of soft bite...mmmm... )... but i dont think i would make this too often, once a year is good enuf for this chutney....

it was made.. eaten and now i dont know when next it shall be made again... :P [winks]

friends vs family

"Choose your friends carefully, for they are the ones who help mould your life" a saying i've heard so many times.. from family members, and other relatives..

I do agree we need to pick our friends with caution..
but arent there times when we just gel - connect with someone and they become good friends?
they might have habits, or quirks that we dont like
but we care and like them anyways...
is this wrong?
should we break off contacts with them?

On the other hand, family is something we are born with
no choice
no say in the matter
and there are members here as well, who are out to get us, being mean or tell tale sorts
who are forever with eyes wide open trying to get us into trouble...????
do we still gotta love em?
care about em?
should we break off contacts with them?

I know.. i know..ur probably wondering where all this is spewing from..
well, over the years, i've come across friends who mean more to me than my family
and yes, i WOULD Do anything for them

and there are certain members in my family who piss me off.
with whom i want nothing
they come home, i run the other direction
or stay away....

For example-
I go out with friends[yes, i do have a social life... hmfph ;)]
it gets late... people from home call asking where i am and when i will be back home?[ they stay up anyways, even tho i have my OWN set of house keys]
they are ok with my going out, for they know where i am or who i am with
but they panic and call over n over.. [ annoying at times, but hey, what the heck right]
now, is that because of care or concern?????
or fear that someone mite see me somewhere? and come squealing " unga aatha ponna naan annikku anga parthein, rathri padinoru manikku [i saw your daughter/girl of the house at that place at around 11pm in the nite].. add a bit of SNEER to this dialogue and some SMIRK, like as if they know something my family doesnt..[they dont know me at ALLL]
bah, i dont care two hoots for such people.. if they wanna tell , let them... thats all i have to say!!!!

Am i wierd? to me, it is not wierd at all.. i live life by my rules, and go by what my heart says. and thankfully it has led me on the right path ONLY till date... so, i aint worried.. but i hear from folks[ read as parents, or relatives] around me that is should alter my ways? is it necessary? and even if i do, i will only be pretending to like people who i cant stand... now, that would be WIERD in capital letters...lolz..

are there are others out there who have such views?

[general ramblings after a restless nite].... :)

[Cooking] Sabudana Vada

Gramma had been wanting to make Sabudana aka Jevarisi Vada the past couple of days.. She had eaten some yummmy vadas during their last trip to Bby at a relatives' house..

I too enjoyed them when we had them in Delhi at Dilli Haat.. plus i love Jevarisi..[in kanji{poridge}/payasam form]

So today being the boring sunday it normally is, we decided to make the vadas... here is how...

What you need:
Sabudana/Jevarisi - 1cup - let it soak in water for about 2-2.5hrs
Peanuts - roasted and coarsely ground - 1/2-3/4cup

Potato-2- boiled and mashed
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves
Green Chillies - 2-4
OIl - to fry

How to make:

1.
In a bowl, mix all the ingredients well...

2.In a kadai, heat some oil... make patties of the mixture and deep fry...

Once it turns golden brown, you can remove from oil.. let it cool and dig in..

It was yummmy.. delicious... crunchy... crispy.. light... lip smacking... do try~ :)
