Books Books and more Books

Saw this tag on Monika’s blog, got tempted
Saw this tag on Prateek’s blog and knew i had to do it....
And today, Vishesh has tagged me on his post...

A book worm like me, not do a book tag.. Blasphemy i say!! Here goes...

Favorite childhood book? Mystery of the five find-outers and Naughtiest girl series- Have lost count of how many times i would have read and re-read these books. And don’t remember who introduced me to the books either.!! Probably my uncles..

What are you reading right now? The Outlier-Malcolm Gladwell; Ripples-Collection of stories by women writers and  [re-reading] To kill a Mocking Bird Harper Lee

Bad book habit? – If it is a good book, i tend to finish it in one shot, ignoring everything else, including sleep. I don’t read the paper, i read my book along with morning coffee and again at night, i end the day with a few pages.

Do you have an e-reader? – Nope and I don’t think I will ever buy one. I do have the option of ebook reading on my iPod touch, but nothing can beat the joy of flipping pages and savouring the words.

Do you prefer to read one book at a time or several at once? Iused to read only one book at a time, but off late i read multiple books[atleast 2-3, 1 of which will be non-fiction]

Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog? I read as much, if not more. I have met like minded people, book lovers, and the doors to many more authors, genres, books have been opened via blogging.

Least favorite book you read this year (so far)? The Brick Lane by Monica Ali has to be the worst ever read book all my life.. I just couldn’t plough through the pages and it is an award winner.

Favorite book you’ve read this year? Eat pray love by Elizabeth Gilbert

How often do you read out of your comfort zone? I don’t really have a comfort zone when it comes to books, I can read anywhere, in an empty room or crowded mall/coffee shop. When at home, at night i like to read for a while on my bed before sleep takes over

What is your reading comfort zone? Anywhere where i have a good book is my comfort zone... Could be the bed, sofa, porch, dining table, loo, train, bus, or flight...

Can you read on the bus? Yes...

Favorite place to read? I love sipping on hot coffee or hot chocolate and enjoying a book in Coffee shops.

What is your policy on book lending? I am possessive of my books, but don’t mine lending them to friends/people who i know will take care of the book and return it in good condition.

Do you ever dog-ear books? Nope, i use bookmarks... J

Do you ever write in the margins of your books? Nope, if the book is mine, it will have my name and date of purchase on front page.

Not even with text books? Well, in text books, i used to highlight and maybe jot down a word or two here and there, but this too i started while in college.

What is your favourite language to read in? English and Tamil. Trying to read some Spanish[since i started learning that language]

What makes you love a book? The cover design, the plot, subject [law, medicine, travel, etc], language, characters, Pace and style of writing.

What will inspire you to recommend a book? If I enjoyed a book i will recommend it. At times i recommend books based on the person i am recommending them to [knowing their interest]

Favorite genre? Crime, Travel, Biographies, Romance & books that make you think[insightful]
Genre you rarely read (but wish you did?) – Science fiction

Favorite biography? Higher Than Hope: The Authorized Biography of Nelson Mandela and The autobiography of Maharani Gayatri Devi

Have you ever read a self-help book? I have tried reading Robin Sharma, but just dint work!! Enjoy the Fish Tales and of course Eat Pray Love

Most inspirational book you’ve read this year (fiction or non-fiction)? The Last Lecture  by Randy Pausch and Its Not about the Bike by Lance Armstrong

Favorite reading snack? I generally don’t eat while reading but i might have a cup of tea or coffee with a cookie, or sandwich when am in a coffee shop.

Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience – Cant recall any such book. Probably because i don’t give in to the hype, infact i go the other direction J

How often do you agree with critics about a book? Ever since i started blogging, i rely on reviews and feedback from friends and fellow bloggers.

How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews? I do write book reviews, and well, if the book was terrible, i will write the same.

If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose? Spanish & French

Most intimidating book you’ve ever read? Arthashastra by Kautilya.. My cousin had been wanting to
read, so i had bought it for him, but thought i shall read before giving it , and failed... Couldn’t go beyond 1st 5pages, it was beyond me.

Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin? None

Favourite Poet? Keats, Wordsworth, Ogden Nash and Rabindranath Tagore.

Favourite fictional character? Sherlock Holmes...

Favourite fictional villain? Raavanan? Does he qualify?

Books I’m most likely to bring on vacation? Indian Authors and Light reading material.

The longest I’ve gone without reading – 12days, when i attending Vipassana in Pune last year and we were not allowed to read.
Name a book that you could/would not finish-- The Brick Lane and Arthashastra
What distracts you easily when you’re reading? Work!

Favourite film adaptation of a novel? Devil Wears Prada, The Godfather series, Angels & Demons, My sister’s Keeper, The Firm

Most disappointing film adaptation? Aisha, Da Vinci Code are the only ones i can remember offhand.

The most money I’ve ever spent in the bookstore at one time?  In one single purchase? Probably 1K... Most of the time its small purchases, or using gift vouchers

How often do you skim a book before reading it? Always while shopping for books, and never while getting ready to read.

What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through? The books gets beyond boring, an important phone call, guests at home, or work

Do you like to keep your books organized? Yes, i do.

Do you prefer to keep books or give them away once you’ve read them? I keep the books and I dream of a huge library at home

Are there any books you’ve been avoiding? Not really.

Name a book that made you angry – Kite Runner, Thousand Splendid Suns, and Daughters of Arabia....

A book you didn’t expect to like but did? Almost Single by Advait Kala

A book that you expected to like but didn’t? Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry and Brick Lane by Monica Ali.

Favourite guilt-free, pleasure reading? Calvin & Hobbes, Archie comics, Pearsl before swine, Dilbert[on my Blackberry], Nicholas Sparks, Haruki Murakami, Banana Yoshimoto, Jodi Picoult, Nora Roberts, RK Narayan, Jeffery Archer, and whole host of Indian writers.
A book is a garden, an orchard, a storehouse, a party,
a company by the way, a counselor, a multitude of counselors.
~ Henry Ward Beecher ~
And that brings us to the end of the original tag and now starts Shilpa’s version

Books I love or “the ones I can read again and again and again and…..”

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts : "Gosh, that is one big book" was my 1st thought. No sooner did i start reading, did i realise it was quite a riveting story, with some fun one liners and a good mix of everything we look for in a book.

Malgudi Days: RK Narayan is one man who knows how to write and hold audeince’s attention through the book, till the last word. Enjoyed the book, watched the TV series, and now rereading the book.

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch- I saw the video on Youtube 1st, and then hunted for the book, found it in the library and read it within 2hours. What a life changing, inspiring book that is...

Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box [LEADERSHIP & SELF-DECEPTIO] by Arbinger Institute, a book recommended by a friend, sent to me in e-format. I recall taking print outs and reading this... Good read for those who want to learn about Thinking outside the box!! Dont think the book is in circulation, but if you find it, grab it and read!!
Blink by Malcolm Gladwell- A book that wasn’t gripping, a non fiction, but one that was interesting, had me thinking and wondering if we all act 1st and think later. Beautifully explained concepts!

And yes, there are so many more books that have inspired me, moved me, touched me, made me cry, scream, want to pull my hair out, strangle the writer and made me laugh...  If you are a book lover, enjoy reading, sharing, and want to, go ahead do this tag!! Let me leave you with this...............

Readers may be divided into four classes:
1.) Sponges, who absorb all that they read and return it in
nearly the same state, only a little dirtied.
2.) Sand-glasses, who retain nothing and are content to get
through a book for the sake of getting through the time.
3.) Strain-bags, who retain merely the dregs of what they read.
4.) Mogul diamonds, equally rare and valuable, who profit by
what they read, and enable others to profit by it also.
~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge ~

Nice one. Serves as a good questionnaire for book lovers to keep track and evaluate how they evolve with their reading habits if recorded from time to time.
